The PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) procedure was actually developed before LASIK laser eye surgery. With PRK, Dr. Kelly uses a laser to re-shape the cornea just like our LASIK in NYC does — but PRK is an ablation technique, which means the laser is used to remove tissue from the cornea’s outer surface.
PRK Eye Surgery Procedure in New York City and Long Island
In the LASIK procedure, a portion of the cornea is lifted away from the eye and the tissue beneath it is altered. Because the unaltered corneal tissue is replaced over the altered cornea (acting like a natural bandage), healing is much faster after LASIK. However, PRK is more effective in certain situations.
When is PRK More Effective Than LASIK?
- When the corneas are thin
- When the corneas are oddly shaped
- When the cornea is steep in contour
- When the patient suffers from lazy eye (amblyopia)
