Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance — such as pollen — or a food that doesn’t cause a reaction in most people. When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen as harmful, even though it isn’t. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive system.

SEASONAL: Symptoms of eye allergies can cause a condition called allergic conjunctivitis. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, or SAC, occurs when you are allergic to specific pollens or other allergens that only occur at certain times of the year.

YEARLY: Perennial allergic conjunctivitis, or PAC, results from an allergy to something that is present in your environment year-round. This could be dust, dust mites, pet dander, air fresheners used in your home, or any number of other substances that cause an allergic reaction.

The severity of allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor irritation to anaphylaxis — a potentially life-threatening emergency. While most allergies can’t be cured, treatments can help relieve your allergy symptoms.
