Intacs Eye Surgery in NYC

Intacs are micro-thin, semi-circular implant segments that are inserted just under the outer edge of the cornea. By flattening the curvature of the cornea from within, Intacs allow light to more effectively pass through the cornea and focus on the retina. In turn, this provides sharp, clear vision without the need to remove corneal tissue.

Key Benefits of Intacs

  • Minimally invasive
  • Fast recovery
  • Implants can be removed or replaced
  • No disturbance/damage to the eye structure
  • May delay the advancement of keratoconus
  • May delay or eliminate the need for a corneal transplant

Intacs Procedure Details

You will need to arrange for a ride home after your surgery appointment.

The Intacs surgical procedure is virtually painless, taking around 15-20 minutes to complete for both eyes. Including prep and the short amount of time you’ll stay in our recovery area, the entire appointment should be approximately one hour. If needed, we can provide a Valium® to help you relax before the procedure.

Anesthetic eyedrops will be used to numb your eyes, and an eyelid holder will be used to keep your eyes open during the procedure. Dr. Kelly or Dr. Bissette will perform surgery on one eye at a time, using a laser to make two channels between the middle layers of the cornea, around the outer edge. The Intacs implants will then be inserted into the channels. With Intacs, prescription changes can easily be handled by inserting ring-segments, eliminating the need for the removal of additional corneal tissue

Insurance Options

Many patients want to know if their procedure is covered by health insurance. This isn’t always clear until we have spoken with you, but many services that we offer are fully or partially covered. If there’s a procedure that you’re interested in and you’d like to know whether or not it’s covered, we encourage you to inquire about specifics when you’re in the office with us. We can determine if your procedure will be assisted by the financial help of health coverage.

“I highly recommend Dr. Kelly. He is a very kind, caring, sincere, professional eye doctor. He went step-by-step while he was performing the surgery. By him explaining it to me, he made me feel comfortable and at ease.”

Recovery and Results

After the surgery, you may experience some very mild discomfort. You will remain in our recovery area for a short time, your eyes will be checked, and you will then be released to go home. The majority of Intacs patients are able to return to their regular activities within 24 hours.

Common side effects include watery eyes, itching, burning, or scratchiness for a few hours. It helps to take a nap for these first few hours. Be sure to avoid rubbing your eyes or putting pressure on your eyes for several weeks.

You will begin to see dramatic improvement in your vision on the first day following surgery.
