A Refreshed, Rejuvenated Appearance

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a procedure that repairs droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat. With age, the eyelids stretch and the muscles that support them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below the eyelids, resulting in sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under your eyes. Besides making you look older, severely sagging skin around the eyes can negatively impact your peripheral vision — especially the upper and outer parts of your field of vision. Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate these vision problems and make your eyes appear younger and more alert.

What Eyelid Surgery Can Do

  • Correct sagging skin around the eyes
  • Reduce eyelid puffiness
  • Improve vision that has been affected by excess eye skin
  • Decrease fine lines around the eyes
  • Remove under-eye bags and fat pockets
  • Correct “hanging” lower eyelids that reveal white beneath the iris

Eyelid Surgery Details

In most cases, eyelid surgery is done as an outpatient, day-surgery procedure. Either local or general anesthesia may be used, depending on your preferences. The procedure can be done on just the upper eyelids, just the lower, or both during the same appointment.

For upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Kelly will make a small incision inside the crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and fat. The same process is repeated for the other eye. For lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Kelly will create the incision just underneath the lower lash line, or inside the lower eyelid to remove fat pockets.

Recovery

Most eyelid surgery patients are able to go out with some makeup at the end of two weeks. Upper eyelid surgery typically requires about one week of recovery, and the time needed to recover from lower eyelid surgery will depend on your specific case. Swelling and bruising can be expected for about two weeks.
