What is SMILE Pro with VisuMax 800?

SMILE Pro is the latest advancement in minimally invasive surgical vision correction. In a new study assessing patient comfort and satisfaction we are thrilled to report the following results with the VisuMax800 laser:

  • Laser treatment time in 9 seconds.
  • 96% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their vision 24 hours after surgery
  • 92% said their pre-procedure comfort expectations were met or exceeded
  • Majority reported little to no anxiety during the procedure
  • Majority experienced minimal to no pain and only mild to no pressure
  • 94% felt ready to resume normal activity within 24-36 hours

The next-level VisuMax 800 system takes SMILE Pro to new heights. This newer approach delivers faster treatment times, enhanced accuracy, and a more compact design for an overall improved patient experience.

What Makes SMILE Pro Laser Eye Surgery Different from Traditional LASIK?

During LASIK, a small flap is made on the surface of the eye, and the laser then re-shapes the cornea. This corrects the refractive error, and the flap is then lowered so it can heal. With SMILE Pro laser eye surgery, no flap is made. Instead, a laser is used to create a very precise, lens-shaped portion of tissue within the cornea and a small-incision opening. Next, the portion of tissue is removed through the micro-incision. The cornea then settles into the shape needed to accurately focus light onto the retina. During a complimentary consultation, Dr. Kelly or Dr. Brissette will help you determine which option is best for your eyes.

Additional Procedures with VisuMax 800

Although SMILE Pro is the headline procedure of the VisuMax 800, this technology can also perform:

  • ICR (Intracorneal Ring Segments): A versatile option for treating certain corneal conditions or irregularities.
  • LASIK Flaps: Once FDA approves the VisuMax 800’s high-speed flap creation, the LASIK process will be further streamlined with unmatched precision.

VisuMax® 800 SMILE Pro FAQ

Am I Too Old or Too Young for SMILE Pro with the VisuMax 800?

How Soon Can I Resume Normal Activities After SMILE Pro?

What If My Corneas Are Thinner Than Average?

Will I Need Reading Glasses in the Future?

Is SMILE Pro Painful?

Can I Drive Myself Home After the Procedure?

How Does SMILE Pro Compare to PRK?

Am I Too Old or Too Young for SMILE Pro with the VisuMax 800?

There isn’t a strict age cutoff for SMILE Pro, but most candidates are over 18 and have a stable prescription for at least a year. Older adults can also benefit, provided their eyes are healthy.

How Soon Can I Resume Normal Activities After SMILE Pro?

Many patients can return to normal activities—such as work, light exercise, and routine errands—the next day. However, we recommend avoiding strenuous activities, swimming, or contact sports for at least a week or as directed by Dr. Kelly or Dr. Brissette. This ensures optimal healing and the best possible outcome.

What If My Corneas Are Thinner Than Average?

SMILE Pro is often an excellent option for patients with thinner corneas because it does not involve creating a large flap, as in LASIK. However, every situation is unique. During the consultation, Dr. Kelly will measure your corneas to see if you’re a suitable candidate or if another procedure would be more appropriate.

Will I Need Reading Glasses in the Future?

SMILE Pro corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism but doesn’t stop natural age-related changes such as presbyopia (typically starting in your 40s). You may still need reading glasses later in life for close-up work.

Is SMILE Pro Painful?

Patients often report minimal to no pain during SMILE Pro. Numbing drops keep you comfortable, and the VisuMax 800’s streamlined design further reduces discomfort and anxiety. Afterward, you may experience mild irritation or dryness, but this usually subsides within a day or two.

Can I Drive Myself Home After the Procedure?

You must arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home, as your vision may be blurry or sensitive to light immediately after SMILE Pro.

How Does SMILE Pro Compare to PRK?

Both SMILE Pro and PRK are bladeless and effective for correcting nearsightedness (and, in the case of SMILE Pro, astigmatism). However, PRK involves removing the top layer of the cornea and requires a longer healing period. SMILE Pro is less invasive, typically involves a faster recovery, and patients often return to normal activities more quickly.
