If you are over the age of 40, you may have already noticed that, as you get older, it becomes harder and harder to see things clearly up close. You may need to squint and distance yourself from your phone trying to read your text messages. You may not be able to see the words on the newspaper as well as you used to. This condition can be very frustrating, and is actually extremely common.

Almost everyone in this age bracket will begin to experience this condition, called presbyopia. Even those who have had LASIK surgery in the past will experience this decline in near vision. The reason for this is that the lens inside of the eye ages and becomes stiff, making it more difficult for the retina to focus on close images.

The KAMRA® inlay is ideal for people who want to reduce their dependency on reading glasses, but it isn’t right for everyone. The ideal candidate is someone in their 40s or 50s, who wears bifocals or reading glasses and is looking for a better near vision solution.

The KAMRA® inlay is a smooth procedure that only takes about 15-20 minutes. The surgeon inserts the KAMRA®  inlay which is smaller and thinner than a contact lens, into the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea. The inlay creates a pinhole effect that focuses the light coming through your eye and restores your near vision while maintaining your distance vision.

Common KAMRA®  Questions

At your free KAMRA® consultation we will discuss if the KAMRA®  inlay is the best option for you according to the health of your eye. However, if you are tired of searching for your reading glasses and depending on them with every activity there is a high possibility the KAMRA®  is right for you.

The KAMRA®  inlay sits in the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea.  Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a mini-ring with an opening – or pinhole – in the center.  This pinhole allows only focused light to enter your eye. The KAMRA®  inlay is placed in only one of your eyes, allowing you to see up close, while maintaining your distance vision in both eyes. Your non-K KAMRA®  eye is left untouched. Working together, the eyes allow you to see near to far. This is unlike monovision laser vision correction, which corrects one eye for near and one eye for distance and does not last over time.

It is important to understand there may be times when additional magnification is needed for small print to see in dim light or to perform a near task for an extended period of time.

Our doctors have not had to remove any KAMRA inlays from our patients. However, yes the KAMRA®  inlay can be removed. After removal vision generally returns to the level the patient had prior to the implantation of the KAMRA®  inlay. This does not guarantee that your vision will return to exactly what it was before the surgery or that your eye will not have permanent damage.

How does the KAMRA® inlay correct vision?

The KAMRA inlay is 3.8 mm in diameter with a central 1.6 mm central aperture. The technology of the KAMRA® inlay makes use of pinhole optics, an optical principle that has been familiar to photographers for years. When the aperture of the KAMRA inlay is centered on the line of sight of the eye it produces the phenomenon of expanded depth of focus.
