How Crystalens® works

Cataracts represent a clouding of the eye’s natural clear lens. Currently, the only treatment for cataracts is cataract surgery in which the clouded lens is removed and replaced with a new clear lens.

Crystalens® is an accommodating lens, which mimics the way your eye’s natural lens focuses on objects at different distances.

Your natural lens is flexible and surrounded by a special muscle. When you look at objects at different distances, this muscle changes the shape of your natural lens to focus light from the object on your retina so you see a clear image. This is known as accommodation.

When Crystalens® is used to replace your eye’s natural lens, it functions in a similar fashion. When the eye’s muscles move to respond to your vision demands, it moves Crystalens® forward or backward, focusing light on the retina and allowing for clear vision.

Is Crystalens® right for you?

Crystalens® gives people more flexible vision than monofocal lenses. Many people who get Crystalens® do not require glasses for any task after cataract surgery.
