Eye Allergies & Conjunctivitis Center
Eye allergies can be difficult to deal with. The itchy, red, swollen or watery eye symptoms that accompany allergic reactions can interfere with your ability to work, read, and drive or simply to enjoy life. Fortunately, Dr. Kelly and Kelly Vision Center can help alleviate your symptoms.
Causes of Eye Allergies
Symptoms of allergies that affect the eyes are referred to as allergic conjunctivitis. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, or SAC, occurs when you are allergic to specific pollens or other allergens that only occur at certain times of the year. Hay fever is a type of seasonal allergy, and can result in SAC.
Perennial allergic conjunctivitis, or PAC, results from an allergy to something that is present in your environment year-round. This could be dust, dust mites, pet dander, air fresheners used in your home, or any number of other substances that cause an allergic reaction.
Treating Eye Allergies
The most effective way to reduce the symptoms of eye allergies is to remove the allergens from your environment. This is not always possible, however, and even when it is possible it cannot always be done immediately. Therefore, it is important to seek out help that will reduce the uncomfortable symptoms of SAC or PAC.
For seasonal allergies, many people use antihistamines during the time of year when the allergens are most prevalent. Eye drops can also help soothe the redness and swelling of the eyes that result from SAC.
If you do not know what is triggering your allergies, an allergist can help you determine what in your environment is causing the problems. Dr. Kelly, working with an allergist, can offer the best chance of reducing or eliminating your eye allergy symptoms.
