What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a cloudiness of the eye’s natural lens, which lies in the middle of the eye. For most of our life the lens is clear. As the cataract becomes more mature, it becomes increasingly opaque and dense, resulting in less light reaching the retina. The light that does reach the retina is scattered, blurred, and distorted. This causes a gradual impairment of vision. People with cataracts perceive images as less sharp, crisp, and vivid. Colors seem subdued and there is often glare around lights. If left untreated, cataracts can cause avoidable blindness.
The development of cataracts is usually part of a normal aging process but can result from certain diseases such as diabetes. Cataracts typically become noticeable by age 55, with most of the population having them by age 75. Other causes of cataracts are trauma, certain medications, excessive sun exposure, and a genetic predisposition.
About the procedure
The procedure for the removal of cataracts requires an experienced and licensed eye surgeon. It may seem unnerving when you are confronted with the decision to have cataract surgery. But once you understand what a cataract is, how it will be removed, and the benefits from the procedure, you will likely feel much more comfortable. Many patients are opting to have their cataracts removed at an earlier age to start enjoying better vision sooner.
Cataract surgery is one of the most safe, effective, and successful surgical procedures in medicine. The surgery typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and is performed using anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye. Most patients leave the surgery center a couple of hours after arrival. The surgery is performed on one eye at a time with a typical separation of a few weeks between eyes. The actual surgery is calledphacoemulsification and involves the removal of the cataract with sound waves. There are usually no stitches used. Once the cataract is removed, an artificial lens is placed in the eye. This lens is called an intraocular lens and helps focus light after the cataract is removed.
The type of intraocular lens placed is important as different lenses have different features. Most lenses can correct only for one focal point (usually distance vision), but new technology lenses are effective at correcting both distance and near vision. During your office examination the physicians and staff at Kelly Laser Center will take measurements of the eyes to determine the power of the intraocular lens to be used.

Most lenses placed during cataract surgery are monofocal lenses, meaning they can only correct for one type of vision (primarily distance vision). This leaves the patient with the need for reading glasses to see up close. Now there is breakthrough technology whereby a lens can restore a range of distance vision for a person, near through distance, while minimizing visual disturbances such as nighttime glare and halos.
The technology is known as apodization and diffraction and has been used in microscopes and telescopes to improve image quality.

The material that the ReSTOR® lens is made of has been implanted in more than 30 million eyes since 1991. Only 5% of people had very noticeable nighttime halos, and some grew accustomed to these visual disturbances. Some continued to notice them indefinitely. A small percentage noticed increased difficulty distinguishing objects from a dark background and should take extra care when driving at night.
