Love is no longer Blind…

“Love Love Love Kelly Laser Center and the whole staff. I got my Lasik done last week and I cant stop spreading the word about how great the process was and my excitement about being able to see 20/15…WOW. I am offiically a walking billboard.”

Always Having to Think Twice…

Wearing glasses or contact lenses inhibits you from doing normal things like jumping on a jet-ski, jumping in a pool, or even waking up in the morning and being able to see the clock. It was an absolute hassle.

The Future is Not So Far Away…

I heard about laser surgery years and years ago, maybe 15 or 20 years ago.  I never thought it was something I was ever going to be able to do or afford. It was something futuristic. Then, two or three years ago, a friend of mine had it done with Dr. Kelly and told me it was the best thing in the world. After that, I started considering it for myself and knew Dr. Kelly was the man to go to. I made my decision after wearing my glasses for the entire summer, which I had never thought I would do in my entire life. I decided I was going to do it and set up the appointment. I thought to myself, “it’s a free consultation, I’ve got nothing to lose.”

I Trusted Him with My Children’s Eyes…

My two older children also had it done. They went in for their first consult and, thank God, they were both candidates for the surgery. They were done with the whole process within two weeks. It was that quick. It depends on what your situation is. You can really get in, make an appointment and be done pretty soon after.

A Perfect Gentleman…

He’s such a nice, gentle, intelligent man. He knew everything. Any questions I asked, he had something readily available to give you back as far as a response. The whole experience was just fantastic. If you have to go somewhere, go to Dr. Kelly. The facilities are great. Everybody, the staff, is very sweet. They just can’t do enough for you. They’re great and fantastic to be around.

New Peace of Mind…

He explained everything to me. He was so patient. They do all these tests and sit down and explain everything to you. He explained to me how he would perform the procedure, what would happen, etc. All this so you can know what is really going on.

Nothing to Fear…

Dr. Kelly walks you through it. He’s so calm, so sweet, and mellow. He tells you exactly what he’s doing. You don’t have to be afraid of anything. No pain, no discomfort. Just like he said. It was great and quick.

What a Difference…

I remember sitting down without glasses and looking at the clock before they started and then looking at the clock right after the surgery, and what a big difference! You think it’s too good to be true, and then it just gets better. By that night, I was able to watch TV from one end of the room to the other without my glasses or contact lenses. It’s a great feeling.

Best Decision I Ever Made…

I recommend Dr. Kelly to everyone. I’ve already sent so many people there.  It is that great!  He’s just a wonderful, wonderful man. I’d never have trusted my eyes and my two children’s eyes to anyone else. Dr. Kelly is that good. You don’t play with your eyes.

Life with glasses was very uncomfortable, a total headache. I never wore contacts, only glasses, and I was losing them all the time.

My First Visit…

He’s not only a great doctor, but also an honest person. Initially, I went to Dr. Kelly, because my near sight started to deteriorate.  But my far vision was fine, so he recommended I wait a while longer. He told me that the Lasik surgery would help me somewhat but it was more for fixing problems with far sight. I remember he was so upbeat, so into his work.

Several Years Later…

My distance vision started to deteriorate. I went back to his office because I remembered how good he was. He then told me “we have a new procedure, not too many people have had it. In the future, everyone is going to want this. It’s called Lens Implants.”  Dr. Kelly asked if I would be interested.  I asked him, “Would it help my far sight?” He said yes, and that same day I decided to go ahead with the surgery. I knew that Dr. Kelly was the man to go to. I was very impressed with how professional and energetic he was. He really enjoys what he does.

Finally free!…

I was so happy after the surgery was done, and so was he! The difference was like night and day. I could read the tiniest, tiniest letter! I could see in the distance with no problem. I was not scared at all. I just really wanted to get rid of my glasses.

No More Worries…

Life is just more enjoyable now that I don’t have to wear glasses. I don’t have to worry about anything. Before surgery, even going to the store and not being able to see or read food labels was a complete hassle. Dr. Kelly was everything that I expected. Probably more.

New York City, Long Island, and Manhattan, NY

I started wearing glasses when I was 9 years old. I started wearing contacts when I was 17, and wore them regularly. Sometime in my early or mid 20s, the contacts started bothering my eyes and I decided to go back to wearing glasses.

Glasses Were No Fun…

Life was not enjoyable when I wore glasses or contacts. Going to the beach or going on vacation wearing glasses was not very much fun. I thought about laser surgery many times, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, but I just wasn’t ready to do it.

Not Quite Convinced, Yet…

When I first learned about laser surgery, I thought it was dangerous. If something is only around for a few years, you can’t really tell what the long or short-term problems are. When I finally decided to do it, it had been around long enough.  I shopped around a lot, looking for the right doctor. At the beginning, I looked online and came across maybe 8 or 10 doctors.

An Easy Decision…

When I called Dr Kelly’s office and spoke to his staff, they all spoke so highly about him and that made my decision so easy. The consultation was very helpful. I never expected to be talked through the procedure so thoroughly. He explained to me exactly what I was supposed to feel, what I was going to see, etc. I booked my surgery for two days later. He made me feel very comfortable.

Tears of Joy!…

I had worn glasses for 33 years, and to have my eyes fixed in less than 10 minutes has been the greatest experience ever. It was amazing. I went home, took a nap, and two hours later I opened my eyes and saw the clock across the room, 15 feet away… It felt great. I almost cried. Its been two years already and I am glad I did it.

I would recommend Dr. Kelly to anyone – and actually I have. It’s an invaluable experience. I feel free.

It All Started With a Blurry Blackboard…

I first started experiencing vision problems when I was 10 years old. I was getting too close to the TV all the time. One day I couldn’t see the blackboard in class and I had to move all the way to the front of the room. That’s how it all started and it only seemed to get worse from there. I knew I needed glasses and that was that.

Glasses, Then Contacts, Glasses Again, Then LASIK!

I did the contacts thing for a couple of years, and then they started bothering my eyes a lot.  That’s when I decided to try laser surgery. I’m not a glasses kind of guy; glasses don’t look good on me. I felt uncomfortable, but with my contacts I felt kind of cool. I felt like Superman. But once the contacts started bothering me, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I’ve known about laser surgery for a while, about 5 years, and I was just giving it time. Honestly, I didn’t know if I should do it, cause I didn’t know if the technology was up to date or if there were any serious side effects.

Enter Dr. K…

I found out about Dr. Kelly online. I went to yahoo.com and typed in “laser center Manhattan.” He was one of the top doctors that popped up. I checked a few different doctors but when I went to Dr. Kelly’s website, and read the testimonials I felt extremely comfortable. That same day I decided to make an appointment for my first consultation. After talking with Dr. Kelly I was totally convinced to go through it.

Questions, Questions, and More Questions…

I had so many questions, but I really loved the way he explained the whole procedure to me. He told me what the procedure involved and how long it was going to take. I thought ‘this is a piece of cake!’. Getting a tattoo took a lot longer than that — and it hurts more! So I thought, I could handle 5 minutes per eye!

No More Reaching for Those Glasses…

I have to admit that I was a bit scared at the beginning of the surgery. I was afraid of losing my sight. But he is so professional. I just trusted him. I trusted his hands. When I woke up the next day, I saw the difference. The first thing I do in the morning is reach to my table to get my glasses and I thought, “I don’t have do to that anymore.” So yeah – it was painful in the beginning, but it was worth it!

Seeing More Than I Ever Did Before…

Dr. Kelly went above and beyond my expectations because I didn’t think that I was going to be able to see as well as I’m seeing now. Now when I’m walking outside I can see things that I couldn’t see with my contacts. It’s basically like I was shut off from the world for a while and then brought back into it.

Feelin’ Good…

I was so self-conscious with my glasses and now that I don’t have to wear them anymore I feel good about myself. It boosts up your ego. You feel comfortable like this, and I just love it. I’ve been recommending Dr. Kelly ever since. If I went through it, anyone can go through it. I mean, he’s a wonderful doctor to be honest. He calms you down prior to the operation and after. It’s just great. You can’t go wrong with him.

Contacts? Not for me…

I’ve had vision problems since I was a kid. It’s something that’s always been there. I had glasses, but I never wore them because they were a nuisance. I never wore contacts because I didn’t like the whole idea of sticking something in my eye.

Lots of creepy doctors out there…

I first heard about the surgery about three years ago. The first place I went to I didn’t like it. It was too expensive. Then a year ago my girlfriend was nagging me to get it done, so I went to see another prominent doctor who’s always on the radio, and it was horrible. My girlfriend was like, “No way, you’re not getting it done here.” It was like cattle herding. The prices were all crazy. So I was like no, it just sucked. So I heard Dr. Kelly on the radio and when I first went in, I knew right away I could trust him with my eyes. The office was relaxed and comfortable and I got to ask lots of questions.

I was kind of apprehensive about not being able to see afterwards. It’s like skydiving– yeah something can go wrong, but the risks are so low. And my sister had it done and she was happy with it. I was more apprehensive about the money.

Didn’t realize what I was missing, until after the surgery…

I didn’t realize how bad my eyes were until after the surgery. Before things were fuzzy. And vision helps when I’m landing. And after I looked out the plane window, I was like wow this is what I was missing. It was amazing. It helped my jumping. Now I don’t have to second-guess myself.

There was minimal preparation, and then about 45 minutes after the surgery I was a little uncomfortable – just minor stinging. Then the next morning it was great. I was able to wake up and see the TV instantly.

My vision has been continually getting better. It’s awesome that I can see now because vision is not an issue anymore, which is cool. I get to make fun of my girlfriend now because I have better vision.

Look, before you leap…

I’ve told the people I jump with about the procedure and recommend Dr. Kelly and told them that Dr. Kelly has the answers for them. And that I did a lot of research for my own good before choosing Dr. Kelly.

My best dive of all…

The staff was super helpful, and as soon as I walked in the door I knew that I was going to do the surgery with Dr. Kelly. And you know what’s was really cool, is that Dr. Kelly was so excited about the new technology just like I’m excited about skydiving. He was just so excited to show me all the technologies, and it was just so obvious that he loves to help people and he’s really into what he does. He really cares and it’s so personal. That’s why I let him work on me.

Happy Birthday To Me…

Vision problems have been a part of my life as far back as the second grade. Yes, the second grade. I’ve always either worn glasses or contacts practically my entire life but this past April I decided that it was finally time to say goodbye to the annoyance of falling asleep in my glasses or itchy, dry contacts during allergy season and give myself the best birthday present of all… perfect vision.

Scaredy Cat? No, Not Me!…

Well, maybe just a little. I started thinking about having the procedure a year before but still wasn’t completely convinced that I should go through with it. I mean hey, these are my eyes. What if I go blind? I did some research on the Internet, saw Dr. Kelly’s name, and finally made the decision when I went home for Christmas. Some of my friends were talking about having it done so I just looked at them and said you know what? If you do it, I’ll do it. And I did. I was also the guinea pig for a lot of my coworkers because I am the biggest scaredy cat when it comes to anything that’s painful.

I Can See Again! And Wow, I Can Drive…

One of the biggest changes I noticed after the surgery was how much better I could see to drive at night. I no longer had to deal with the glare from my glasses and even from my contacts. It’s amazing how different you feel when you don’t have to bother with vision correction anymore. I mean glasses and contacts are such a pain and you know that when you’re wearing them, but you don’t understand just how cumbersome they are until you don’t have to deal with them anymore. It’s funny though, you get into such a habit of putting your contacts in everyday that a couple of days after my surgery I went into the bathroom and asked my roommate where my solution was? She just looked at me and laughed.

Dr. Kelly Can I Ask A Question? Or Five? Or Six?…

Dr. Kelly is amazing. I instantly knew when I sat down in his office that he would be the doctor to perform my surgery. I had so many questions ranging from “Will I go blind?” to “How long will the procedure last?” He was so patient with me and made me feel completely at ease. I trusted what he said unlike the doctors I’d visited before. At one office the doctor dilated my eyes right before I had to see the financial consultant. They wanted a check right then as a down payment and of course I couldn’t see a thing. I left and never went back. I’m in insurance so I definitely shopped around and Dr. Kelly was by far the most professional and made me feel the most comfortable.

Never too late to see well…

I found out about the surgery through the union I’m with. A bunch of the guys were having it done. Eventually I saw a 70-year-old guy get it done and that convinced me. They all recommend Dr. Kelly. It took me about 3 years to go get the surgery, and that whole time I was watching all these guys get the surgery and seeing their results.

So I just went to Dr. Kelly. I heard stories about not being able to see at night, but none of these things happened to me. After I got it done I took “glasses” off my CDL license. That was one of the first things I did.

The little things are great…

I was amazed at the results. I can read my watch and see the clock. Just being able to read the newspaper is so nice.

The staff was excellent. In fact, they were so helpful that when I came in for the surgery, I forgot my check and they allowed me to use the phone and transfer my money.

I had no presurgery worries. I got to wear these neat sunglasses after. What’s more, I don’t need reading glasses anymore, so I’m really happy about that!

Checking everything twice…

I had a vessel in my eye that was ruptured a long time ago and Dr. Kelly did all these procedures to make sure I was a candidate. After that was taken care of and I was qualified, I had the surgery about 3 months later.

The right eye was done in under a minute and the left eye was about a minute and half. There was no discomfort, it was just a little different.

Watching the game…

Everything is easier. I don’t have to ask what’s the score at a Yankee game. I can see without having to go get my glasses. Dr. Kelly is a miracle!

Glasses For A Little Girl…

I think I was about eight when I went for my first eye exam, and nine when I first got glasses. I remember that I had trouble in school — you know, seeing the board and writing. My writing was horrible, my handwriting, and so they were doing all sorts of tests thinking there was something wrong and finally just realized I needed glasses. Contacts I used when I was in my twenties. I was eighteen when I first got contacts and wore them until I was about thirty.

The Problem With Contacts…

During my teenage years, my vision worsened but then pretty much stabilized once I reached my twenties. I was nearsighted with astigmatism. However, I didn’t teach when I was in my twenties; I worked in business, and when I started teaching, all the dust in the classroom got under my contacts. I could only wear hard contacts, you see, because my astigmatism was so bad, and the dust would get under the contacts, so I couldn’t wear them in the classroom.

Active Mom Blues…

You know, I could just never see perfectly. I’m pretty active. I love to bike ride and run and swim. Well, I couldn’t swim with my glasses, so I couldn’t see. And I have four children. So if I was in the pool or at the beach, I couldn’t see them. I’d be like, where are they? So I basically stopped going in the pool or the water so I could see them. I couldn’t wear contacts anymore. I hadn’t worn them for years.

Concerns About Surgery…

Well, I had first heard about PRK, the older form of corrective surgery. But I wasn’t willing to risk it then. It was too new. This was fifteen or sixteen years ago. Over the last five or six years I started meeting people who had laser surgery and started researching it. I decided I wanted to go that route because, even with my glasses, I could never be corrected more than 20/30 or 20/35. The astigmatism prevented correction to 20/20. So the possibility that the surgery could fix that sounded wonderful.

Uh, Can I See The Doctor…?

I was nervous — just the whole idea of having something done to your eyes. Of course, you hear the horror stories. But the more research I did, I felt a little more comfortable. I then saw three different doctors. Well, I can’t really say I saw three doctors. I went to three different places. Two of the other places, I didn’t see the doctor who would do the surgery. I saw an optometrist, who just examined me and said I was a good candidate and that I would see the doctor on the day of my surgery. But I didn’t like that idea. I mean, I feel that with any of my healthcare, I want to know who is going to be taking care of me.

Finding Dr. Right…

Right from when Beth answered the phone, she was just very pleasant and kind. I went in and Dr. Kelly spent so much time with me and went over everything and I felt very comfortable about doing it. Then I scheduled my surgery, but just beforehand my mother passed away, which was a difficult time for me, naturally. I had to cancel and ended up putting it off for about a year. When I was finally ready again, I called and Dr. Kelly gave me just as thorough an exam. He completely remembered me — and there were things that we had talked about that were beyond anything he put in his records, because I teach and we had talked about literature and he remembered a book I had recommended for him to read to his own kids. And I thought, wow. I was just very impressed with all the time he spent, the level of attention he provided and, again, I felt very comfortable about it.

Let’s LASIK…

I hadn’t told anyone at school that I was getting LASIK until the day before the surgery and everyone was giving me their advice. One woman I work with, her sister-in-law had gone to Dr. Kelly, and she said, “Oh, my sister-in-law loved him.” So that was just another boost. And then, the next morning, my husband came with me. I was a little nervous. He let my husband in and told him exactly what he was doing and spoke to me throughout the whole procedure as he was doing it, so that eased any fear for me.

My Procedure…

It really was no worse than having a glaucoma test during a regular eye exam. Right after the surgery, my eyes were a little uncomfortable — it kind of felt like when I had contacts years ago. The next day, I thought, Wow, I can see. And for the fun of it, I put my glasses on and I couldn’t see with them. It was really amazing.

Amazing Grace…

I had the procedure done on a Saturday and that Tuesday night I went to a Holy Week service at our church. We have a really long church. It’s about 110 feet long. I think I sat in the second row. And I turned around and I saw the clock in the back of the church and I could read it. I was with my twelve-year-old son and I said, “Kevin, I can see the clock!” He goes, “Okay, Mom.” But I could never see the clock before and this was a church that I had been going to since I was ten. I could see. It was so amazing. And I don’t need glasses in the classroom anymore.

Glasses For Another Little Girl — But Not For Life…

My daughter is farsighted. She’s eight now. And it was a little hard because she said, “Well; Mommy, why don’t you have to wear your glasses anymore?” So I told her, well, when you’re older and your eyes are ready, you can see Dr. Kelly. It’s something to look forward to, right?

Blurry blackboard…

I first experienced vision problems in high school. I couldn’t see the blackboard.

I knew Dr. Kelly was the doctor for me…

I heard about laser surgery about eight years ago and it kind of scared me. Then I heard more about it and went in to get more information. As soon as I went in to Dr. Kelly’s office I knew I was going to do it. Dr. Kelly was such a nice person. He was specific and comforting. He explains all his equipment, and he has all the up-to-date technologies. He told me how many surgeries he’s done, which is like 9,000 already. He tested me to see if I was a good candidate for the procedure and I was. He was there every time I went in and he kept explaining to me everything that was happening. And I decided to do it. It’s incredible. It really is. You think it’s going to be great and it’s 100 times better. I had the surgery on a Saturday and the hardest thing was that I had to wear my glasses to work the week before.

It’s really wild…

I was amazed. It was really wild. I have perfect vision. It’s really a miracle. I wake up and I can look at the alarm clock without my glasses and read the time.

I do a lot of things like camping and skiing, so it’s a pain in the neck to try to take contacts in and out in a tent. Now it’s so much easier. I don’t have to think about bringing all the solutions and my extra glasses.

No Fear…

I had no fears because Dr. Kelly explains everything to you. He tells you everything you could possibly want to know. Everyone there is so nice and they make you feel so calm and comfortable. Everything is so modern it’s great. It’s only about 2 minutes on each eye. It’s so fast! My sister got to watch, and then she got her eyes done about a year later.

The day after the surgery, your eye feels a little itchy. Then I just slept that day and the next day I was fine.

It was like a dream come true. You never think that you’ll be able to see after wearing glasses for so long.

Are you sick and tired of your glasses or contacts getting in the way of your lifestyle? Please call or email Dr. Kelly at Kelly Laser Center to arrange a free LASIK surgery consultation.

Blind As A Bat…

I was nearsighted, first diagnosed in fifth grade. I was getting in trouble all the time because every place I would go, I would pick things up and bring them into focus. You know how it is when you’re a kid and it’s always, don’t touch that, don’t touch that? It was annoying, and not my normal behavior because I was a pretty good kid, but when I couldn’t see something that would interest me, I would pick it up. So they took me to the doctor and the doctor — I’m from a very small mid-western town in Indiana — said, “This kid is blind as a bat.” So it was glasses from that point and then shortly thereafter contacts, when I got a little older and could handle them. You know, ironically enough, I was so thrilled to be able to see, I was actually proud of having glasses. It wasn’t until I went back to school, after getting them during the summer between 5th and 6th grade, and kids started calling me names like four eyes and things like that, you sort of realize that it wasn’t a cool thing. There’s always someone there to pull the chair out from under you. But for me it was a way of life, because to see that well at that point was amazing. Because it was just not an experience I could recall, it had been so long.

Glasses Versus Contacts: A Losing Battle…

At the time, hard contacts were all that was available. Eventually, they switched them to gas permeable, which were slightly softer, and one time I did try soft lenses, but the focus was really out. Soft lenses don’t give you clarity like hard lenses, but hard lenses are much more uncomfortable. Glasses were just annoying. At least with contacts you could wear cool Gucci sunglasses or even Raybans or something like that. Being a fashion guy, it was hard not being able to wear something that wasn’t prescription. And behind the ear it gets really sore, you know. I hate it. Plus the prescription was so bad, they were heavy. So they looked bad, they felt bad. It was a lot of things. I wore lenses so long that I noticed I was straining and squinting even while wearing them, and the prescription was getting progressively stronger and stronger. But the discomfort level was what really tripped me, because I just… I just couldn’t stand it.

Compromised Quality Of Life…

You can’t walk down the street in New York without constantly rubbing your eyes. Something gets under your lens and you’d stop, and you’d be crying major tears and people would be like, what’s wrong? It’s like sticking needles in your eye when you’re wearing lenses and you get soot in your eye. It’s really painful. And so you go places, you arrive at restaurants, you go to parties, and you’re eyes are constantly red and irritated. People always think you’re upset and crying. It’s really mind-boggling. For me, what I love the most is my work, but when I would have to squint and hold things close in order to see… it’s annoying.

A Tip From Kathie Lee…

I first heard about LASIK years ago. I have dealt with a lot of celebrities in what I do, in terms of dressing them, and I was doing Miss America in 1988 with NBC in Atlantic City. The guest host that year was Kathie Lee Gifford. I was assigned to her and that’s actually when I met and became friendly with her. And it came up in conversation that she had her vision corrected, through one of the very first forms — actually I think it was radial keratotomy at the time, it wasn’t even LASIK. And she swore by the procedure.

Thinking It Over…

And then, over time, I just kept hearing about it. My brother married a woman who worked for an optician and she did it and she would be talking about it. I never really looked into it here, in New York, but every time I would see her in Indiana, we would talk about it and I swore I was going to do it. Then I would think, well, it’s too expensive. I’m not going to do it. I don’t need this. So it really wasn’t until the prescriptions started getting progressively worse and the lenses became progressively more uncomfortable that I really thought, I need to look into this.

Looking For Dr. Right…

Honestly and truly, I pulled up the five top people in the New York metropolitan area and just did a little reading on them and called all their offices. I thought Dr. Kelly’s receptionist was great. She answered a lot of questions, and I have to tell you, she was on the phone with me for a long time, because it was one of those things where if I make the commitment that you’re going to cut my eyes, I want to feel like I have some kind of relationship there. So that was sort of comforting to me, that they were very nice and very tolerant — because I’m sure they get nine hundred people a day like me who go, ‘well, what about this’ and ‘what about this?’ But it is a big deal when you’re talking about surgically correcting your vision.<

Meeting Dr. Kelly…

At the consultation, he was really, I thought, considerate and concerned about my concerns and gave me all the possibilities. You do appreciate the reality of the situation. He was charming, he was nice, he was well spoken and well read, and we clicked. He was my third consultation, I think, in the flesh, and I booked the appointment before I left the office. There was just that much of a difference. When you walk into an office and a doctor doesn’t even really look at you, or engage you eye to eye, and then starts telling you, “I did this” and “I did that” and “I started this” and “I was the first to do this,” and it’s “me, me, me” and “I, I, I,” you sort of go, okay, but what about me? And that wasn’t the case with Dr. Kelly. He wanted to know why I was there, what I was doing, and what I hoped to gain, and then he addressed his experience.

The Procedure…

I wasn’t really nervous or concerned the night before. Then, that day, the two people who assisted him in the procedure were great. They kept asking if everything was all right, kept reassuring and comforting me throughout. And it really is a very quick process for the most part. It takes more time to sort of set it up. And I also liked the fact that he checked and rechecked and then checked again to make sure that he was doing what needed to happen. I wouldn’t call it painful, I would call it uncomfortable.

Nearly Instant Gratification…

As for the eyes, I thought it was amazing that I could go into that office and walk out several hours later — and I did not have anybody pick me up, good, bad, or indifferent, because I live four blocks from the office — then head up Lexington Avenue and see! Oh, it was amazing. My surgery was supposed to be at six, but it ended up being at eight because they were a little bit behind. I went home, and the painkiller was kicking in big time, so I went to bed. But I remember waking up the next morning and thinking that I was still dreaming because when I opened up my eyes, everything was so clear. I actually thought that maybe I’d fallen asleep with my lenses in, which with hard lenses is a big deal because they go way back in the eyes and it’s a nightmare. And I remember opening the blinds and going, “Shit, I can see the mortar between the bricks. I can see the veins on the leaves on the tree. This is amazing. Look at that, look at that.” It was unbelievable. I don’t think I’d ever seen like that. So, for me, it was really a miracle. To me, you know, my first real thought was that this is what technology should be used for, you know, instead of blowing people up, it should be fixing people, because this is amazing.

A Sharp New Outlook On Life And Work…

At my office, they always say I can hear a whisper in the back. My staff doesn’t really get much on me. And all of a sudden I would be at one end of the showroom, and I could see the details that were going on in a fitting down at the other end. And I didn’t even think about it, I would just say, “That button is crooked,” you know, or something like that. Or “The left shoulder looks higher than the right.” And my staff would go, “You can see that?!” It got to be a joke. You have bionic ears and now you have bionic eyes?! Oh, Christ. We’re screwed. But it’s great, because I really can.

Mild Nighttime Blurriness…

In Times Square, where they have major, major lights like that at night, I do get a little blurry sometimes. But I’d rather take a little blurriness at night in the middle of Times Square than complete darkness because you can’t see. I mean, you go out with friends and if your lenses have been in since six or seven that morning and it’s nine o’clock that night, it’s like you just wanted to scratch, you know. It was an awful feeling. And so you’d find yourself rubbing your eyes, and what it does is send people the message that you’re bored. It wasn’t boredom at all. It was discomfort. But it was very difficult for them to understand. So it’s great now. It’s one o’clock in the morning and I’m still going strong. It’s not a problem.

The Bottom Line…

I just think my work is more joyful for me — and, I mean, I know that sounds kind of bogus but it really is, because I love what I do and to be able to just glance and see it, boom, crystal clear, and make a decision, boom, without having to strain to see, it’s great. The procedure was very efficient and effective and it works. I mean… it’s just a great thing.

Is the movie screen blurry? Or is it just me?

When I was about 20, I went to the movies and I couldn’t read the credits. I thought, why are they making them so blurry? That’s when I first realized that I couldn’t see well anymore.

Glasses just wouldn’t behave…

The glasses were a pain in the neck. Anytime it would rain I’d get rain spots and when I’d go into a hot room from a cold room, they’d get fogged up. When I would do sports or go to the gym and sweat, they’d fly off my face. And men don’t make passes at women with glasses. It’s easier to flirt without the glasses.

What’s this LASIK thing?

A close friend had the procedure, and that’s when I considered the laser surgery as an option. Actually, Megan had it, Cynthia had it, and Linda had it. Linda was one of the people who approached me and recommended that I have it done.

I was worried about the expense, and I’m definitely a paranoid person, so I was concerned about the safety. It took a little while until I decided on the surgery, but I’m the world biggest procrastinator, so I can find any reason not to do something. I became serious about the surgery after my friend Cynthia had it done.

Tears for fears…

I wondered what happens if something went wrong and the expense was also a concern. I did lots of research about the surgery. I’m a librarian, so that’s what I do, and I did article research and spoke to friends who are doctors and they recommended it. I looked for facts and statistics and I looked for information about my particular situation with Rosacea, and I looked to see if there were any side effects. And what most people don’t know with Rosacea is that it can go in the eyes and cause blindness, which is rare.

Dr. Wrong, Wrong, then Dr. Right!

I went to three doctors, my regular guy wasn’t a specialist. He was also pretty expensive. Then I went to Dr. Kelly and he spent an hour and a half with me. We talked about Rosacea and he was able to count the number of patients he had who had Rosacea. He just spent a lot of time with me. After that I went to see another doctor who is on the radio all the time, and I just didn’t get a good vibe. He wanted to do a different surgery that would involve contact lenses, and I felt he was two-faced and didn’t spend time with me. The more doctors I went to, the more I realized how much I liked Dr. Kelly. He was the one. So six months after my initial appointment, I called back to schedule the surgery. The staff was very nice.

Within minutes… and I could see!

The days before the surgery I was fine. Because I have Rosacea, I had to take an antibiotic before the surgery and that was it. And then I went right to the office. I had my two friends who also had the surgery come and meet me so they could take me home. They were right outside the door watching. It takes 10 minutes! It’s amazing! There’s some discomfort because you feel pressure, but it’s amazing how well you can see.

Better than I thought…

It’s even better than I thought. The next morning I could see. My eyes just kept getting better and better with each passing day. I had to use drops for about two weeks but that didn’t stop me from doing anything.

It’s amazing. It was weird – I actually had peripheral vision. I wasn’t used to being able to see from the sides, so all of a sudden I was jumping a little. It was great because I noticed people noticing me. I wasn’t hiding behind the glasses any more so people were definitely noticing. Life’s just easier. I don’t hide behind my glasses, and I don’t have to worry about falling asleep with them on – it’s just easier.

Sending more patients Dr. Kelly’s way…

I recommended it to a woman from my office and it’s funny – a woman called my work today and asked for some information about the procedure and I was like, “I know the perfect doctor. My doctor was great!” I sent her Dr. Kelly’s web site address.

Glasses Hampering An Active Lifestyle…

Probably about five years ago, I realized I couldn’t see distance anymore. I was getting blurry. And then I went and got glasses, but I had a pretty active lifestyle because I rode a motorcycle and I boxed, so I didn’t want the glasses interfering. They were bothering me.

Forget Contacts…

I didn’t even try contacts. I never felt comfortable sticking things in my eyes, and I didn’t feel I could do it. And my sister had contacts and she had problems with them. I remember her having infections and stuff. I mean, I’m sure that’s probably not as common today but, still, I just didn’t want to go through that.
Dr. Kelly Runs In A Vision Corrected Family…

Meanwhile, I’m in sales and one of my customers came back without glasses. I said, “Well, what happened to your glasses?” And he told me that he was the seventh person in his family to get his eyes done by Dr. Kelly. He told me, “Go see him. The consultation is free.” So I went to see him, liked him very much, and decided to go through with the procedure.

Sometimes Less Delivers More…

Now, I could read pretty well but I couldn’t see distance. And Dr. Kelly had said that he wanted to do just my left eye, my dominant eye, and leave the other one alone, because I didn’t realize that once you fix your distance vision, you can’t read as well anymore. So I agreed to do that, but then when I talked to a few people in the gym, they said, “Just get them both done, you want to get both of them done anyway.” So the day I went for the operation I said to him, “Doctor, I just want to get them both done.” And he says, “No, I won’t do that.” He says, “You’re not going to be happy. Believe me. And if you do want to get the other one done, you can always come back and do it.” So I said, okay, fine, and I did one. Then it was about a week after that I was driving down the parkway on my motorcycle and I could see all the signs, I mean, perfect. My vision was excellent. And I looked at the dashboard and I could see that perfect. But when I used just the eye that he corrected, I realized I couldn’t read the dashboard anymore. And I realized if Dr. Kelly had done both eyes, I would be able to see these signs fine but I wouldn’t be able to see my dashboard, and I would have been very unhappy.

With Dr. Kelly, It’s Always About The Results…

Then I remembered how he said to me, “Look, it’s half the risk and half the price, but that’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is your results.” And I realized he really did the right thing, because he could have taken me for twice the money. And that’s when I said to him, “If you even need me to give a testimonial, I’ll be available.” And that’s how we got where we are today.

Now, The Best Of Both Eyes…

I don’t have to wear reading glasses. Sometimes when it’s very, very, very small, I use a magnifier a little bit, but most of the time I don’t need anything. And it’s funny because your eyes only use the best picture of both eyes, so I really don’t know where that line is but now I can see very, very clearly up close and I have 20/15 vision in the distance. One eye can’t see distance and one eye can’t see close up, but when they’re both open, I can see everything. And that really was the result that I was looking for. So I would have been in really bad shape if I had done both, because I would have been unhappy. Again, he could have got me for twice the money and he didn’t, and I was very happy with him talking me into doing that because he came out with the best result.

It Started With A Blurry Screen…

I was nine years old. Remember how they used to have those films in school where you would have to read a subtitle at the bottom of the screen? Well, I couldn’t read the bottom. So they sent a note home saying that maybe I needed to get my eyes checked, and my parents took me and I needed glasses. So I was supposed to wear them all the time, and I wouldn’t wear them all the time. I would just wear them to read or to do my homework, watch TV, stuff like that. And I guess over the years my eyes just got worse. Basically, I never used to wear my glasses, because I hated them. Then, when I was fifteen, I was in a wedding and got contacts. So I began wearing contacts ever since.

Hating Glasses…

I just didn’t like these things sitting on my face. And, you know, glasses, they were unattractive. My first pair of glasses was like, huge… and my mother still has them! And she’ll pull them out. “Oh, look at her first glasses.” And I’m just like, ugh, stop. I was nearsighted and my glasses were thick. I’d have to pay to have them thinned out, stuff like that. So it was bad. I couldn’t see the clock when I woke up at night. I couldn’t see the computer screen. I’m sitting right there and it’s still difficult. So it was pretty bad.

Losing Contacts…

Contacts I liked, but when I first got them, they were the hard contacts, so they were kind of uncomfortable at times. They would pop out. Stuff like that. I’d lose them. My parents would have to spend money to buy new ones. Then after a while the disposable ones came out and those worked well for me, because then I would just throw them out and that was it. I was nearsighted but all I know is that on the contact box it would have like negative four, negative five, so that’s all I really remember.

A Blade? No Way…

I was always interested in the surgery, but they used to do it with the actual blade, and I saw it being done one day and I was like, “I don’t think I’d be able to do that.” It was on TV. A basketball player was having it done. And I’m looking at him lying there and I’m like, there is no way I would be able to do that, because he was awake. I was like, “There’s no way!” So I just put it on the back burner. I just never thought about it again. And then I started hearing about people getting it. And I thought, well, a lot of people are getting this surgery so something must be up. So I started asking and people told me it was now being done with a laser.

The Coworker Test…

So a coworker of mine, he had glasses or contacts, and he told me he was going to have the surgery done. He went to a couple of doctors and somehow he heard about Dr. Kelly, and he went and he made the appointment to have the surgery done like two days later. So then he came in that Monday, and I said, “You can see?” He said, “I can see.” So he gave me a card for Dr. Kelly, and I still didn’t make the appointment right away. Then I went in January for the consultation and he told me I was a candidate, gave me the pricing, all the paperwork, everything. And I just didn’t do anything still.

The Final Straw…

Then one morning it took me like half an hour to put one contact in. And I was like, you know what? When I get to work, I’m making that appointment. And I made the appointment and that was it. I guess it was just God telling me, you know what? You’re a candidate and you need to do this. I mean, I just sat there and I was like, I can’t believe it is taking me so long to put a contact lens in.

The Consultation Experience…

The consultation is very, very extensive. I’ve never had such an extensive eye exam, and everything is high-tech. I would look into the computer and it did the vision evaluation on its own. It was amazing. He showed me all the machines and walked me through the whole process. Then a woman from the office went over all the financials, because it is priced according to your vision. She gave me a nice little packet and sent me on my way. No one ever called me to ask me when I was going to make the appointment, nothing like that. And I just did it on my own.

A Little Nervous…

Oh, yeah. I didn’t eat. I was really nervous. The night before, or two nights before, I had to go in for a final consultation with them and I was really nervous. But Dr. Kelly told me I’d be fine and calmed me down. And when I got there, other patients are there and so I got to talk to them. Some people there have already had it done. And we all just bonded.

All right, Let’s Go…

It’s not painful. It’s just scary, and a little uncomfortable. As I was lying there, he talked me through the whole procedure. He was like, “You’re doing great.” When it’s over, he tells you to close your eye. When he told me to open my first eye, I went “Oh, my God, I can see.” I mean, it was a little blurry, but it was clearer than I was accustomed to. And so when he was ready to do the second eye, I already knew what was in store. So after the first eye, I was like, “All right, let’s go.”

I Could See…

The only discomfort I had was when I got home and the light was bright in the kitchen, so I had to go in the living room, where it was a little darker. And then, after a while, it just started to feel like I had sand in my eyes. And then I just took my Tylenol and went to sleep. And when I woke up the next morning, I was like, “This is like really, really weird — I could see.” I had the surgery done on a Thursday evening, and when I went to see him on Saturday morning, I had 20/40 vision. And then when I went back maybe a month or so later it was 20/20. And then I just went a couple of weeks ago and it was 20/17.

Needing (And Hating) Glasses…

I’m an executive assistant in the financial industry, working in midtown. I’ve had vision problems since I was five years old. That’s when I was supposed to start wearing glasses but I, for as long as I can remember, refused to. I remember in grade school, if I was ever seated in the back, I couldn’t really see the blackboard very well. I knew I had bad vision, but, for some reason, I have no idea why, I just refused to wear them. I always lied to my parents about it.

The Trouble With Contacts…

I started wearing contacts, soft contacts, when I was about thirteen years old until I had the surgery, which was about six or seven months ago. Contacts helped me see, but they were still very uncomfortable. I would walk into a shopping mall, and, maybe from the perfume or whatever, my eyes would burn. If I drove with the windows open, the contacts would get dry and feel like they were falling out of my eyes. It was very uncomfortable. And I think possibly the contacts gave me migraines at times, too.

Sold On The Surgery Solution

I guess I heard about the laser surgery option through an advertisement or through a news story. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but I remember when I did hear about I was very excited and it struck my attention right away. I just needed the means to do it. So once I had the money and it was the right time, that’s when I decided, hey, I’m going to start looking into this.

Seeking The Right Doctor

I went on the Internet and looked at several different sources. I saw Dr. Kelly’s site. I read about it. I felt comfortable with it. It was mostly Dr. Kelly’s experience that appealed to me about his website and the way it focused on that fact that he was dedicated to corrective eye surgery and that he had performed so many surgeries. So I gave him a call. Initially, I was going to shop around for different doctors and see which I felt most comfortable with. But then I set up an appointment for a consultation right away, probably within the same week or two weeks, met with Dr. Kelly and that was it. Like I said, initially I was going to shop around, but when I went to see Dr. Kelly, he was very accommodating. Dr. Kelly explained everything to me very thoroughly, including all the terms I was unfamiliar with, and he did the eye test himself. I felt very comfortable.

The Very Next Day…

After the consultation I decided I was going to go with him, and, believe it or not, I got the corrective eye surgery the very next day. They told me their next appointment was in a month so I asked if they had anything sooner. They said, well, you know we might have a cancellation for tomorrow. They confirmed it, and I went the very next day and had it done. I had a little bit of concern as far as, you know, people with horror stories. Because it’s your eyes, some people are very fearful. It’s such a vital part of your life. But I felt very comfortable. I didn’t think twice about it. I just went and did it. I’m actually very indecisive usually. I think about pros and cons back and forth. But I felt very comfortable.

Procedure Time…

I was slightly nervous the night before but more excited than anything, because, seriously, not being able to see properly was such a problem, especially driving at night, that I was excited to see comfortably without contacts, glasses, or anything. I went to the office, and, once again, the staff was very accommodating. They made me feel very comfortable. I actually had somebody there with me. And I was slightly nervous but I went in for the surgery and it wasn’t that uncomfortable at all. I had been anticipating getting the surgery done and wondering what it would feel like but while I was getting it done, there was only a little discomfort. No big deal. And it was very simple, very easy.

Brand New Day…

The next morning, as soon as I woke up, it was incredible. It was very exciting. After years and years of not being able to see and being uncomfortable, the next day I could see everything clearly. It was somewhat emotional, too. It was just… it was great. I recommended Dr. Kelly to my whole office.

First coming to America…

I first had trouble with my vision when I was fifteen and I started wearing contacts when I came to this country. I was born in Cuba and came to America when I was sixteen. We went through Spain and then received political asylum here. They let me and my mother leave but not my father. He is still over there. We keep in touch through the Internet. Now I live on Long Island and teach Spanish. As for my vision, I first realized that something was wrong when my mom, one time, asked me to help her find an address and I couldn’t see the numbers on the houses. So she took me to get an eye exam.

Hating Glasses, Abusing Contacts…

I had my glasses, but I was always wearing my contacts — virtually 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I was really bad. I overused them. I didn’t like my glasses. I was uncomfortable. I was a teenager. So my vision started to get worse and worse and worse. By the time I did the surgery, I was like negative 5 in one eye and negative 4.75 in the other. So without glasses I couldn’t see. It was really bad. From overusing the contacts, I used to get infections all the time, so then I would have to get treatment for the infection and wear glasses for two to three weeks.

Not Worth The Risk…

Ten years ago, I was aware that something was in the market to fix your eyes called laser surgery. A friend of mine did it back then, however, and her experience was really bad. Something happened that prevented her from wearing contacts again, and they couldn’t fix it. She had to wear glasses for the rest of her life and I said, “No, I’m not doing this.”

New Baby, New Resolve…

Then, four years ago, when I had my son, it was very frustrating having to get out of bed in the middle of the night and reach for my glasses. Now it’s a problem just taking care of your baby. So I thought, well, it’s been many, many years. I’m sure everything is more advanced. Let me start researching laser surgery again. So I did. I went on the Internet, looking at different doctors and different web pages, and I saw the procedure online and I said, “No, I’m not ready for this.” I was scared after reading about all the possible side effects. So I waited another three years.

Enough Already…

Then finally, this past summer, I had really bad allergies and I couldn’t wear my contacts. I said, “That’s it, I have to do this.” I started to do some research again and I found Dr. Kelly on the Internet. First off all, I had a bunch of printouts from different doctors and I was very skeptical. But I liked the way Dr. Kelly’s website was set up, the way it guides you through everything. I was familiar with a lot of the terms and procedures by then, but I liked the way he presented the information. I liked the fact that he had his picture there, that I was able to read patients’ thoughts and comments. And then, of course, I liked the location. When I saw the address, I knew exactly where the office is since it’s very close to my house on Long Island. That night I submitted all my information and they called me the following day and I saw him that same week.

Enter Dr. Kelly…

I got there for my consultation on a Wednesday afternoon. He was amazing. I had been very afraid about doing this, and he made me feel so comfortable and secure. The way he guided me through the procedure, the way he explained everything, was very clear and reassuring. He was very kind, very… well, human. He didn’t feel like just a doctor, he felt like a friend. When he told me after the exam that I was a candidate, I felt so comfortable with him that my only question was, “When can I do it?”

A “Zero Pain” Procedure…

I came with my husband. When I got to the office, Dr. Kelly was waiting for me. I had already filled out all the paperwork, so that was all set. I was nervous. It wasn’t that uncomfortable, but you feel a little nervous. I had this wonderful lady who was holding my hand. Dr. Kelly was amazing too. He explained everything he was doing as he was doing it and kept telling me I was doing great. The support, the way he is, made such a difference. It was not painful at all. Zero pain.

Sweet Recovery…

Once it’s done, your eyes get watery a lot. You feel like you have pink eye, or kind of like you have sand or an eyelash in your eye. You have that sensation. The best thing was to close your eyes and relax. But actually, I have to tell you, when I got up from the machine, I was already seeing better than I was before. I saw my husband’s face and I saw Dr. Kelly’s face and I was thrilled. I was seeing, of course, with shadows, and it wasn’t totally clear yet, but I was seeing better already even before I went into the recovery room. Twenty minutes later, after he checked me one more time, Dr. Kelly told me to take two Tylenols and go home to sleep, and he would see me tomorrow. That’s exactly what I did.

The Amazing Thereafter…

When I woke up later, I have to tell you that it was the most wonderful experience of my life. I was able to see everything around my house. I went to the shower, and my shampoo and my conditioner look the same, so every time I took a shower before, I had to hold them up close, but now I could see them. I was reading everything around the house. I could see the clock. I could watch TV. It was amazing. I was seeing perfectly. He did the eye test that Saturday morning, not even twenty-four hours after the surgery, and I was able to read the tiny little letters. It was wonderful. I said to Dr. Kelly, “Can I give you a hug?” Because what he gave me was so precious, when you cannot see and then, from one day to another, you are able to see everything. It’s amazing. It’s really amazing.

Dear Dr. Kelly,

I just wanted to let you know how critical it was that I had the Lasik procedure performed before deploying to Iraq.
When I first went into Iraq at the beginning of the war, no one knew what to expect. We encountered sporadic small arms fire, night attacks on our compound, and natural hazards such as sand and dust storms.  It was under these conditions that we had to react very quickly at times, especially at night. I can’t imagine having to fumble for glasses in that situation or having to engage a threat with my previously poor vision. I could sleep comfortably knowing that if anything happened (which it did on numerous occasions), I’d be ready to handle it immediately

Prescription ballistic eyewear wasn’t quickly available when we left, and thanks to the Lasik procedure I was able to wear readily available non-prescription ballistic glasses, protecting my eyes from sand, dirt, and more importantly debris from explosions.

The Lasik procedure enabled me to be ready for whatever we encountered without having to think about it, as I had to all my life wearing contacts or glasses. Needless to say, I’ve been recommending the procedure to new guys heading over.
Thanks again. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Above is a letter from this 34 year-old US Army Intelligence officer from Brooklyn, New York (name withheld for security). After his procedure with Dr. Kelly in the summer of 2002 to correct nearsightedness, he was deployed to Iraq where he quickly learned the benefits of the LASIK procedure. We wish him and those around him a safe return.
