Eye Twitching

Eye twitching, or blepharospasms, can be an irritating and persistent problem that interferes with your daily life and even hampers your vision. Most eye twitching is relatively harmless, but in some cases it is a sign of a serious underlying condition. For most patients, eye twitching can be resolved with simple solutions. If you are bothered by eye twitching in New York, Kelly Laser Center can help.

Why Does My Eye Twitch?

Before treating your eye twitch, we need to determine the underlying reason. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Eye strain
  • Computer vision syndrome
  • Too much caffeine or alcohol consumption

Additional causes for eye twitching that can be potentially more serious include:

  • Genetics
  • Pinched nerve
  • Medications such as those used to treat epilepsy and psychosis
  • Neurological problems including Tourette syndrome, Bell’s Palsy, and Dystonia

Often these causes are experienced in combination. Some simple changes, such as improving or supplementing your diet and getting more rest, may improve or eliminate eye twitching. However, some patients are unable to make these changes or are unable to implement them fully enough to resolve the problem.
Underlying causes that ophthalmologist James Kelly may be able to treat directly to stop the twitching of your eye include:

  • Allergies
  • Eye irritation
  • Dry eye

Although it is not always possible to correct these underlying causes of eye twitching, we can still treat the twitching itself, greatly improving your quality of life.

Solutions for Eye Twitching

Dr. Kelly may recommend diet and lifestyle changes to resolve your eye twitching. If computer use or similar activities are contributing to your eye twitch, he can teach you eye-healthy habits that will reduce your eye strain and improve your eye health even if you find that you need further treatment to stop the twitching.
The preferred treatment for persistent eye twitching is BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections relax the muscles so they no longer spasm. The injections are very targeted and precise. The results last several months and you may or may not need to repeat the injections. For some patients, stopping the cycle with BOTOX® Cosmetic and backing that up with diet and lifestyle changes can be a permanent solution. In rare cases, surgery to remove the nerve or part of the muscle is necessary.
