What is a cataract?

A cataract is a cloudiness in the eye’s crystalline lens. It is the same word as used to describe the cloudiness of water as it runs over rocks in a river.

Where is the eye’s lens?

The lens is located behind your iris. It is the part of your eye that changes focus to let you see at different distances.

What causes cataracts?

Cataracts are caused by changes in the protein of your lens. The exact mechanism is poorly understood, but it is often associated with:

  • Aging
  • Exposure to UV or other radiation
  • Diabetes
  • Steroid use
  • Eye injury
  • Eye disease
  • Some types of eye surgery

Cataract risk increases with age. When your cataracts may become vision-threatening is dependent on a number of factors including genetics and your lifestyle.

How can I prevent cataracts?

There is currently no known method for preventing cataracts. However, you may delay your risk by:

  • Avoiding sun exposure and when you do go out, wear sunglasses that absorb UV radiation
  • Not using tanning booths
  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating a diet rich in vitamins C and E, especially one that includes green leafy vegetables
  • Keeping diabetes under control
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Avoiding the use of steroids

These recommendations continue to be evaluated and are subject to change. Our New York cataract eye surgeon will update them as more research becomes available.

How are cataracts treated?

Cataract surgery is the only method available for treatment of cataracts. In cataract surgery, your eye’s natural lens is removed by a cataract surgeon and replaced by an artificial lens.

How can I choose a cataract surgeon?

There are many important factors to consider when choosing a New York cataract surgeon. Among them is your surgeon’s experience and results with the variety of intraocular lenses available today. There are now many options that can help you get the results you desire from cataract surgery, and it is important to work with a cataract surgeon who can help you find the one right for you and give you the results you desire from your cataract surgery.
