Crystalens IOL

Most people have heard about cataracts, but they may not be fully aware of what this condition is. Cataracts cause a person's vision to become cloudy or fuzzy and cause problems with:

  • Vision in dimly lighted situations
  • Vision in very brightly lighted environments
  • Night driving
  • Halos around lights
  • Faded colors

The cause of this common condition is clouding of the eye lens due to changes in the proteins of the lens. The clumping of proteins on part of or the entire lens can produce a fuzzy image on the retina and ultimately blurred vision. Typically this condition is found in older adults but may be seen in individuals of any age.

Cataract surgery is safely and effectively performed on an estimated 2 million Americans every year. Board-certified eye surgeon Dr. James R. Kelly is proud to offer his patients the revolutionary Crystalens® accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) to help correct this condition and improve his patient's overall vision.

How Crystalens Differs from Standard IOLs

In the past, when patients underwent cataract surgery, the eyes' cloudy natural lens was replaced with an artificial lens that allowed patients to have improved vision for one distance. In other words, the patients would be able to see well either close-up, far away or at average distances. Patients experiencing presbyopia, or blurred vision when performing certain tasks such as reading or working on a computer, would still have to wear corrective glasses or contact lenses to see properly.

Crystalens replacement lenses correct cataracts as well as presbyopia, allowing most people to see both near and far after surgery and live their lives without the need for glasses or contacts.

Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating IOL on the United States market today that corrects both cataracts and presbyopia.

How Crystalens Works

Crystalens is an accommodating IOL, meaning it flexes and adjusts to meet your different visual conditions. The central optic portion of the IOL uses the eye muscles to continually move and focus on the images around you. Only one image is delivered to the back of the eye with Crystalens as opposed to a multifocal lens, so the brain does not have to continually adjust to the image changes.

The Crystalens Process

During this procedure, the eyes are numbed and a micro-seal is created on the cornea's edge. After washing away the cloudy lens, the new Crystalens is inserted. The procedure is quick and typically pain-free.

If you have been experiencing cataract symptoms and wear glasses or contact lenses for presbyopia, the Crystalens accommodating intraocular lens could be the solution to your vision problems. Please contact Kelly Laser Center in New York City or Long Island today to schedule an eye exam to see if you are a candidate for this amazing procedure.
